Great article! We've fell into the social network hype, and lost our focus when we were building Spokeo. It took us 4 months to realize that we were deviating from our core value proposition, and of course, stripping out all our hard work in the past is not an easy decision.

But we did. Our product is an aggregator, and adding random sharing features compromises the ease of use, which is the essence of aggregation. Oftentimes, more does not equal better.

People will make the same mistakes that we made though, no matter how many times we share the lessons we've learned. It is hard to ignore the hype, and only experience can prevent us from making the same mistake twice.

Same goes for "user mashups" or any sort of "user generated content." If it doesn't make sense to let users mess with your application, don't. Users only want control of the aspects it makes sense of them to control - anything more is a feature they won't use.
